Good things in Poland

What are good things in Poland?

Well, let’s start not with things but people. You can see a lot of attractive girls and women here. That’s very nice.

For people enjoying the nature it’s a really good place – I recommend Bieszczady mountains in the south-eastern Poland. They are wild but beautiful and not so touristy. There are many nice forests all over the country. They are fantastic to walk or ride a bike and there is no real threat from any animals. No snakes or tigers, anything like that.

Talking about food and drink, Polish dry vodka is good but don’t exaggerate and never mix it with beer or some other liquor. Remember that and you’ll be fine provided that you don’t drink too many glasses.

There are many more good things in Poland but I just wanted to tell you about a few of them.

Poland in The World Factbook by CIA

You can find some essential information about Poland in “the World Factbook” prepared by CIA.

I will try to add some more facts to make this picture clearer.

First of all, talking about Polish government and politics you should be aware of two big parties : Civic Platform - PO and Law and Justice - PiS. The country is ruled by Civic Platform and their Prime Minister Donald Tusk. However, the President Lech Kaczyński is from Law and Justice. The president has much less power than the prime minister.

Kaczyński’s twin brother Jarosław is the most powerful politician in Law and Justice party and he decides about everything important in his party.
Polish public opinion is divided into two main camps supporting two biggest parties. Civic Platform has more supporters in big cities while Law and Justice is more popular in the country.

There are some other less important parties like former communists SLD or the traditional farmers’ party – PSL.

Politics is a delicate issue and I wouldn’t recommend anybody to discuss it openly
in Poland because some people tend to be really emotional.
Poland belongs to emerging markets so it’s neither rich nor poor, somewhere in between. Big cities and popular resorts look more or less the same like in other European countries but 20 or 30 years ago.

However, the gap is smaller and smaller every year.

Most people are happy if they earn about $1000 a month (more than 3000 PLN). In big cities many of them make twice more.

The current exchange rate is around $1=3,20 PLN.
When you arrive in Poland don’t change money at the airport (only a small sum of money) but do it in the city centre in places with a sign “Kantor” on them. They offer better rate and give you a receipt. They don’t give fake money.

The prices in shops are similar to other European countries but some articles like food are cheaper.

The roads in Poland are awful and renting a car is not a good idea if you aren’t a really experienced driver.

Welcome to Poland!
